Sharon Murphy, Art Fair Chairperson (626) 355-3977
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Friends of the Sierra Madre Library are pleased to announce and introduce Ivy Shuman as the Featured Artist for their 49th Annual Art Fair, Saturday May 7 and Sunday May 8.
A woodturner for over 25 years and self-described "wood-junkie", Ivy, owner of Storied Woods in Chatsworth (www.storiedwoods.com), is expecting to present his selection of art pieces which will include wood vases, classic bowls, flower bowls, and business and home accessories. "My creative endeavors have evolved from a high regard for craft and craftsmanship. Early on, I'd fallen in love with the color, figure and texture in wood. Each piece of wood is unique in its features, which includes the flaws," said Ivy "By incorporating the most exciting and interesting elements with creative design, I strive to offer a distinctive variety of turned wood art."
Shuman began woodworking in 1977 making furniture, fly tying boxes and bookcases. His first lathe was purchased in 1984 and so began his love with this turned form of artistic expression. Ivy's work is currently sold through Southern California art galleries, shows and specialty shops, and he's been a regular at the Friend's Art Fair for the past eight years. "I have a lot of galleries that carry my pieces, but an event like the Art Fair allows me to have more of a relationship with my buyers, "said Ivy. " I appreciate the instant feedback that the face-to-face showing offers, as it allows me to see if they appreciate the work."
The "Featured Artist" is a regular recognition at the Friends Art Fair. According to Sharon Murphy, Art Fair Chairperson, although the medium is rotated each year, the artist is selected for his/her exceptional skill, creating 100% hand-crafted pieces by the artist, and pieces that are eye-catching. "What separates Sierra Madre's Art Fair from crafty-type festivals is the quality of work, "said Sharon. "Ivy definitely reflects the exceptional quality of art that has been a hallmark of our Art Fair," she said.
According to Shuman, he considers those attending the Friends Art Fair to be among the most intelligent and sophisticated of customers. "Those who attend this event understand the various art media, they're easily educated and there's a very loyal following in Sierra Madre. What keeps me coming back to Sierra Madre is also the QUALITY of the art and the artists. It's a pleasure to participate with these other artists," said Shuman. Ivy will be joining these 100 other artists demonstrating their techniques in other media such as oils, jewelry, glass art, metal art, ceramics, weavings and photography.
Memorial Park, at 222 W Sierra Madre Blvd in the heart of charming Sierra Madre will be transformed to allow us to not only LOOK, but to LISTEN to a number of local bands performing both days. Add to this, TASTE from a full food court, and you will be attending what continues to be one of the year's most popular events. Also, for the kids, you'll find the Sierra Madre Creative Art's Group craft activity called "Insects in the Garden). The young ones will enjoy drawing their favorite insect, then create their own garden of plants and flowers, using a variety of different materials.
In addition to teasing every one of your senses, you'll enable to Friends of the Sierra Madre Library to support programs and services. This past year, the Friends donated over $58,000 for library equipment and upgrades. 41st Annual Wine and Cuisine Tasting Event
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Imagine over the holidays you invited 500 of your closest friends over for dinner and wine. Now imagine that these same 500 are pretty sophisticated wine drinkers—each having a different preference for varietal, and each expecting to find their "surprise" vintage.
Such is the job description for Bill Sullivan, 26-year owner of the Bottle Shop in Sierra Madre. This will be the second year Bill has taken on the task of selecting the wines for the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library's Wine and Cuisine event scheduled February 18. This means finding the right wine makers among hundreds of wineries that bottle some of the world's finest wines right here in California. "Because this is my second year, I can now take a look at some of the sales trends to meet the demand at this event," said Bill. "I have a good idea of what attendees purchased, and can make adjustments this year," he added.
"We're excited to have Kim Crawford's Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc represented at the event," said Bill. "This number one selling wine from New Zealand has been producing award winning Sav's for the past seven years," Bill added. This past November, Kim Crawford's 2009 Sauvignon Blanc received first place for the best white wine at The Journal's Best Wines in Cayman tasting. "This wine will offer the event attendees an amazing value for this quality, and should be a very popular offering", Bill said.
One of the returning favorites will be a Robert Mondavi 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon. According to the winemaker, this should prove to be an intense Cab, with dark concentrated fruit, with overtones of warm vanilla and star anise. In fact, this past October, Genevieve Janssens, Mondavi Director of Winemaking, was named Wine Enthusiast's 2010 Winemaker of the Year. "This is really the right recognition for the work she has done to produce exceptional quality for Mondavi", Sullivan said. "I'm looking forward to the response to this Cab, as it's hard to find a better value than this 93-point award winner."
One of the more unique wines at the event will be a Jackson Triggs Ice Wine. Such a variety is produced by allowing the grapes to actually freeze on the vine, which increases the sugar content for this fine dessert wine. "It's so rare to find an ice wine at a tasting, and I'm sure this will be new to many", said Sullivan. "This wine should be fun to taste and will make for a fantastic ending to a nice meal."
"Many in the community don't realize this is great opportunity to BUY wine. This is a convenient way to "visit" over 20 different producers. And, because the wines ordered that evening are discounted 15% - 45% off retail, for those ordering wine, this savings should easily pay for the cost of the ticket. This is really a unique community effort, which is a win-win-win for everyone—the Library is supported, the producer get's to promote the wine, and the attendee is buying wine at a significant discount off retail." Bill added.
Mark your calendar to attend The Sierra Madre Friends of the Library 41st Annual Wine and Cuisine Tasting Event. The always-popular evening will take place at the Alverno High School Villa, 200 N Michillinda Avenue, on Friday February 18 7:00p—9:30p. General entry tickets at a cost of $60 will allow entry at 7:00, but Premier admission will allow 100 folk an early entry at 6:00 and include many new surprises. Current paid members of the Friends will receive a $5 discount off general entry when purchased at the library.
Tickets can be purchased at Arnold's Frontier Hardware, The Bottle Shop, Iris Intrigue, and Savor the Flavor. You can also pick up tickets at the Sierra Madre Library, or on-line at sierramadrelibraryfriends.org, by clicking here. In addition to attending one of the social highlights of the year, you'll enable the Friends to support your library services and programs. This past year The Friends of the Sierra Madre Library provided over $58,000 for equipment upgrades and improvements.

41st Annual Wine and Cuisine Tasting Event—Artist Selection
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Imagine over the holidays you invited 500 of your closest friends over for dinner and wine. Now imagine that these same 500 are pretty sophisticated wine drinkers each having a different preference for varietal, and each expecting to find their "surprise" vintage.
Such is the job description for Bill Sullivan, 26-year owner of the Bottle Shop in Sierra Madre. This will be the second year Bill has taken on the task of selecting the wines for the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library's Wine and Cuisine Gala scheduled next month. This means finding the right wine makers among hundreds of wineries that bottle some of the world's finest wines right here in California.
"Because this is my second year, I can now take a look at some of the sales trends to meet the demand at this event," said Bill. "I have a good idea of what attendees purchased, and can make adjustments for next month," he added. According to Sullivan, the most popular wine at last year's Friends event was Pinot Noir, with Zinfandels running a close second. Most of the wine purchased was under $15 a bottle. "Many in the community don't realize this is great opportunity to BUY wine. This is a convenient way to "visit" over 20 different producers. And, because the wines ordered that evening are discounted 15% - 45% off retail, for those buying wine, this savings should easily pay for the cost of the ticket."
So, how are the wineries chosen? "I'm most concerned with the value of the wine, finding that right balance of quality and value" Sullivan said. He works to find a good selection of not only different varietals, but Bill focuses on wine that is affordable. "There are always brands that some find comfortable, so we make certain that some familiar wines are present, such as Jordan, Mondavi, or Sterling. Most of our folks are now looking for value in wine," Sullivan answered. "With so many wine-related events to choose from, it's important that the attendee sees value in what they can buy, but also in the event. This is really a unique community effort, which is a win-win-win for everyone the Library is supported, the producer get's to promote the wine, and the attendee is buying wine at a significant discount off retail." Bill added.
So, what was most surprising about last year's event? "Without a doubt, it was WHERE the attendees were from," Bill answered. "I'd expected to see mostly Sierra Madre residents, as this is an event to help our local library. But because friends told friends, who told friends, it seemed that a many of those buying wine were from outside the city, he added. "This method of advertisement really speaks to the overall quality of the evening."
Thus far, Sullivan expects the participating wineries to be Madellana, Sterling, Coppola, Hahn, Jordan, Mumm, St. Francis, One Hope, Cupcake and Beringer.

41st Annual Wine and Cuisine Tasting Event—Artist Selection
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Any good sports coach knows that to win, you not only have draft the right players, but also put these players in the right position—where the player is naturally talented. The Friends of the Sierra Madre Library Wine Tasting Chairpersons have been busy doing just that—getting the right players in place for their annual February event.
De and Pat Alcorn are pleased to announce Djbril N'Doye as the poster artist for the Friend's 41st Annual event. Djbril is an internationally recognized artist with work in galleries, homes and businesses throughout West Africa, the USA, Mexico, Cuba, Western Europe and Japan.
"Djbril is a Sierra Madre resident, and has exhibited his work at our Friend's Art Fair for several years "said Pat. "He's graciously agreed to produce and donate his original art work for our Wine Tasting poster which you'll soon see around town. And, you can purchase the piece at our silent auction" Pat added.
Born 1953 into the Lebou Tribe in Senegal, West Africa, self-taught N'Doye considers his work to be "universal" art, his style of drawing inspired by sculptures in ebony. Previously working with standard materials such as oils and watercolor, after a half dozen years of experimentation and research, Djbril developed his own distinct technique using only ballpoint pen. After taking the ballpoint pen drawings to a very high level of professionalism, he began using charcoal pencil on larger surfaces to further develop his intensely emotional drawing style. After receiving numerous awards throughout Africa, in 1985, Djbril founded Suunu Artist's Group in Bargny, his hometown, with the objective of encouraging and developing local artists, painters and writers, to support the Bargny Artist community. After relocating to the USA in 1995, N'Doye has devoted his time to developing his own exhibits. He's actively participating in a number of Southern California galleries and festivals as well as speaking to students from grammar schools to college.

Our featured artist for this year's event is Gail Holl. Gail received her early training at the Philadelphia College of Art. She was a teacher for many years before marrying and raising a family. When her own children reached school age, Gail got involved with the Art Docent Program at Highland Oaks School. She eventually became chairwoman, a position she held for 4 years. Gail then took a year at LACMA to study to become an art docent. When she decided she would rather paint than talk about art, she started taking classes from various masters of the medium, including Heinz Rosein, Feeling Lyn, Jim Burns, Margot Lennartz, and others. Gail is pleased to be able to offer her talent to the Sierra Madre Library for their wine tasting fundraiser.

47TH ANNUAL SIERRA MADRE ART FAIR TAKES CENTER STAGE
About 100 exceptional artists, including several internationally known, will display their fine art at the 47th Annual Sierra Madre Art Fair on Saturday, May 16 from 9:30 am to 6 pm and on Sunday, May 17 from 9:30 am to 5 pm in Memorial Park.
Artists at the long running and popular event will display watercolors, oil paintings, jewelry, pottery, ceramics, glass, weaving, woodcarvings, photography, mixed media and gourd art. This years featured artist is photographer Kenny Tong from Chino Hills, CA.
Kenny found his love for still photography in his early years in Hong Kong first as a hobby and later a serious professional career in the Hong Kong film industry of the 1970s. He moved West in the 1980s and was involved in a variety of Hollywood shoots both film and television. For the past 35 years he has traversed the hemispheres seeking out the beauty and the secrets of nature and transforming them to the photographic canvas. Themes of his work are found everywhere in nature: the delicate forms of beauty we find in the plant blossom to the majestic mountains of China. Persistent effort is made to frame subject through the lens precisely with correct exposure so little cropping of the print later is required. Little enhancement is done to maintain the rawness and original beauty which first captured his attention.
His featured art "Warm Light At Dawn" is on display at the Library and will be on post cards, posters and other promotional materials.
The Art Fair is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and all proceeds go directly to support a wide variety of programs at the Sierra Madre Public Library. For more information call Sharon Murphy at 355-3977 or visit the web site at www.sierramadrelibraryfriends.org.

The Alverno Villa is a duplicate of the Villa Collazzi located on the outskirts of Florence, Italy. Nestled at the foot of the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains in the picturesque City of Sierra Madre, the Villa was built in "pure" Italian Renaissance style in 1922 by the famous Pasadena architect Wallace Neff and was completed in 1928. Originally built on thirteen acres of trees and flowers overlooking the entire San Gabriel Valley, the main building is comprised of two stories and a tower. It is said that the walls are made of two rows of hollow tile to keep the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The lower story houses the reception rooms, dining room, drawing room, and library. The upper floor includes the living quarters and a spacious ballroom. The original owner supervised the planting of the trees which included: orchids, tulips, Japanese Magnolia, strawberry trees, flaming eucalyptus, coral, and carob. To frame the southern facade, a sunken garden was added, lined on either side by Italian cypress.
The villa is now part of Alverno High School a private Catholic girls' school, which has educating young women since 1960.
