This Fund honors our former longtime City Librarian, Mary Tumility. The income from this fund is used to support library materials and programs for the public.
John Sommer and Cynthia Hicks established this Fund in 1991 to help educate future library and information professionals. To qualify, students must be accepted into a program that fulfills these goals.
When our Friends of the Library was founded in 1953, the members astutely discerned that it was likely that the Library would always need extra funding to supplement any allocated tax support. Back then, the Library was composed entirely of books, but ever-increasing advancements in technology have led to new ways in which information is accessed and used, causing funding to become more complex.
In uncertain economic times, government support for libraries becomes unpredictable, as "essential services" become redefined and priorities shift. Realizing that our City budget may no longer support a full-service Library, a concerned group of citizens has formed the Partners group of the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library, to help ensure that our Library continues to thrive.
We invite you to join the Partners, and help us in this important work. The Partners support the Library through an annual dues contribution to the Friends , which is eligible as both a State and Federal charitable tax deduction. The names of all Partners will be listed in our events programs, as well as on a plaque to be displayed in the Library lobby. A regular newsletter will detail how your money is being used, as well as contain information describing upcoming projects.
Please join and help our Library continue to provide the important services that have supported and enhanced the educational needs and quality of life of our citizens for more than a century. If you have questions, please email info@sierramadrelibraryfriends.org.
